Casa Meteca

Inclusive Housing & Public Space

What challenges did this initiative look to address?

The challenges being faced by Casa Meteca are twofold. On the one hand, local residents in Marseille are struggling to stay put and remain in their communities due to touristification and gentrification. On the other hand, migrants and travelers are seeking a place to stay and engage with the local residents without contributing to the gentrification in the city.

What has changed?

Casa Meteca wants to address both challenges by creating a participative hostel for paying and non-paying travellers, a place of solidary cohabitation outside the processes of tourist gentrification. In order to achieve this goal, Casa Meteca is currently organizing workshops and activities to start building connections among local residents.

How did it happen?

The project is still in process and the hostel is not operational as of June 2018. However, monthly activities and regular meetings have been taking place since November 2017
