Urban Lab Nürnberg

Citizen Participation Mechanism

What challenges did this initiative look to address?

Urban Lab Nürnberg, founded in 2015, aims to empower citizens to take the development of their city into their own hands. It is dedicated to creating new creative places in the city where learning is intuitive and ideas can emerge and grow. The fields of work include the implementation of workshops and actions and the consultation and networking of actors in the city. Urban Lab connects institutions that want to contribute to a co-productive city: Companies with schools - Foundations with people in need - Communities with citizens. Therefore, this initiative identifies problems and future challenges for a common life in urban areas - considering that, they develop suitable projects that offer added value for all those involved and for the community.

What has changed?

Over the past few years, Urban Lab has built up a solid supra-regional network that provides valuable inspiration for their regional commitment. A mobile district centre was created and a local community garden project set up. Local actors were networked through intercultural and inclusive individual projects and a large joint festival. Awareness of co-productive urban development was created among both citizens and administration.

How did it happen?

Through joint actions and cooperation, trust and a new awareness for each other were created. After successfully participating in various funding programmes and carrying out two pilot projects together with the German National Urban Development Policy, a third joint project to develop new models for neighbourhood development was just launched. In this context, Urban Lab was able to expand its team in order to consistently improve their work and create values and continuity.
